What is an RCD?
This life saving device is now a major part of BS7671 wiring regulations. A Residual Current Device (RCD) is a modern type of ‘fuse’ that protects against electric shock by disconnecting a circuit before enough current can pass to cause any harm.

The human body will usually only suffer from the effects of shock after more than 35 milli amps has passed through it. Hence, most RCD’s are set to disconnect after an imbalance of 30 milli amps.

This does make the RCD a far more sensitive device and hence more likely to cause nuisance tripping if a cable or appliance is faulty.
